Learn the signs of an HLS playlist and distinguish it from the video itself.
Published
An M3U8 resource is often part of HLS delivery, but seeing one does not necessarily mean the stream is downloadable or complete. A page may expose a master playlist, a media playlist, or unrelated playlist requests. Detecting the right item takes context: play the target clip, compare the candidates, and respect the site's access rules.
The .m3u8 suffix is a useful clue, but names may be rewritten and request lists can contain several unrelated resources. A master playlist typically describes variants; a media playlist typically lists media segments. A detector may show the URL and type without explaining the relationship, so correlate new requests with the video you just started.
On a page with several videos, start only the target player and wait for its requests. Compare the preview and timing, then review any quality and audio information. A playlist from an advertisement or another embedded player can appear nearby. Detection is evidence that the page requested a resource, not evidence that you have permission to keep its contents.
The playlist may reference protected or unavailable segments, require current cookies, or expire after a short time. A supported tool may still be unable to combine its tracks. If you are authorized, retry while playing from the source and use its official download option when present. DRM-protected streams should not be bypassed.
Only download content you own or have permission to save. Support depends on the website and media format; DRM-protected content is not supported.
