Learn how HLS playlists describe a stream and what to check before saving permitted video.
Published
An HLS video downloader works with video delivered using HTTP Live Streaming, where playlists describe media and the player retrieves segments over time. A detected HLS item may represent a master playlist, a specific rendition, or a media playlist. Understanding that distinction helps explain why one link is not always a complete playable video.
HLS commonly uses a master playlist to describe available variants and a media playlist to list segments for one rendition. Separate audio or subtitle renditions may also be referenced. The player uses these descriptions to request the parts it needs. A downloader must be able to access the referenced resources in the relevant session and handle the stream's packaging.
If several variants are available, compare their stated resolution and bandwidth where shown. A higher number is not automatically better: it uses more data and may be excessive for a small display. Check whether audio is included or selected separately. Some streams change variant during playback, so the item currently detected may not describe every quality available to the player.
