Learn how HLS playlists, variants, and media segments fit together, and what to check when saving a stream.

M3U8 is a playlist format commonly used by HTTP Live Streaming (HLS). It describes media resources for a player; it is not usually the complete video file by itself.
An HLS playlist can list media segments or point to another playlist. A multivariant playlist may describe several renditions, such as different resolutions or bitrates. The player selects among them as playback conditions change.
A playlist can provide alternate audio, subtitles, or separate video renditions. This is why a detected stream may show multiple choices, and why saving only one resource may produce a silent or incomplete result. Check the selected audio language and the matching video quality.
The playlist may reference many short segments, require temporary authorization, or depend on headers and cookies from the original session. A compatible tool needs access to the permitted resources and may need to combine segments into a container such as MP4. That conversion is not guaranteed for every stream.
Start playback first, then review the detected quality and audio tracks. Keep the source page available while the download runs, and test the finished file from beginning to end. DRM-protected content is outside this workflow; only download streams you have permission to save.
