See how a single media file can play while it downloads, and how progressive delivery differs from segmented streaming.

Progressive download delivers a media file over HTTP so a player may begin playback before the entire file arrives. It differs from adaptive streaming, which typically requests multiple short segments and may change quality during playback. Knowing which model a page uses helps explain what a browser tool can detect.
In a common progressive setup, the server responds with media bytes from one resource. The player downloads enough data to begin playback and continues fetching the rest. Seeking may work when the server and client support byte ranges and the media metadata is arranged for efficient access. Actual behavior varies with the file and server configuration.
Adaptive formats such as HLS and DASH describe a presentation through playlists or manifests and deliver segments. The player can switch among representations as bandwidth changes. Progressive delivery usually follows one file and does not offer the same segment-level adaptation. A browser may therefore expose one direct resource in one case and many related requests in another.
Playback can start only after the player has buffered enough data and can read the container's metadata. Network speed, file layout, server range support, and the browser's media implementation all matter. If seeking fails or playback waits until completion, the page may be serving a different format or the server may not support the needed access pattern.
If a tool detects a direct file and the site's rules allow saving it, check its type and expected size before starting. Keep the source page available if the request relies on session context. Afterward, test seeking, duration, and sound. Progressive delivery does not imply that a file is free to redistribute; DRM and access restrictions must be respected.
Only download content you own or have permission to save. Support depends on the website and media format; DRM-protected content is not supported.
