Learn what WebM is, how it differs from MP4, and what to check when a saved file will not play.

WebM is a media container commonly used for web playback. A file ending in .webm may use video and audio codecs that are not supported by every device or editor. Before converting or retrying a download, identify what the file contains and which app needs to play it.
A container packages encoded streams and metadata. WebM commonly contains VP8 or VP9 video with Vorbis or Opus audio, though exact support depends on the file and software. The extension alone does not tell you resolution, bitrate, or whether audio is included. Inspect media details when compatibility matters.
Play the source clip and inspect the media options made available by the page or tool. A browser may play WebM directly even if a separate desktop player cannot. Confirm that the selected item is the intended video, not an animated preview or audio-only resource, and note whether audio is a separate track.
If the saved file does not open, first try an up-to-date player known to support the file's container and codecs. Check that the download completed and the file size is plausible. If video plays without sound, inspect the audio track separately. For editing or older devices, transcode a copy with a reputable media tool while preserving the original file.
Changing a filename extension does not convert the video. Transcoding decodes and re-encodes streams, which can take time and reduce quality depending on settings. Prefer remuxing when the codecs are already compatible with a different container; transcode only when a target device requires it. Download content only when you have permission, and do not bypass DRM.
Only download content you own or have permission to save. Support depends on the website and media format; DRM-protected content is not supported.
